I’ve been a backend developer for six years, primarily working with Java and PostgreSQL. Recently, I’ve been feeling stagnant and wondering if expanding into full-stack development would open new opportunities or just spread me too thin. My current company doesn’t have much room for frontend work, so I’d essentially need to self-teach React or Vue while maintaining my backend skills. I’m in my early thirties and worried about the time investment versus the potential return. Some colleagues say specialization is more valuable than breadth, while others argue that full-stack developers are increasingly in demand. I’m looking for honest perspectives from developers who’ve made this transition. What was your experience like, and would you do it again?
