I recently spent a week diving deep into database indexing strategies beyond the standard B-tree index, and it completely changed how I think about query optimization. Most developers learn about B-tree indexes early and stop there, but PostgreSQL alone offers GIN, GiST, BRIN, and hash indexes, each designed for different data patterns. I discovered that a GIN index on a JSONB column reduced a query time from 12 seconds to 40 milliseconds in my project. I want to share what I learned about choosing the right index type based on data distribution, query patterns, and update frequency. This isn’t a comprehensive guide, but rather a practical walkthrough of real scenarios where non-standard indexes made a measurable difference in my applications.
